Beautifully written . . . beautifully shared with all of us.

I know exactly how you feel, having gone through this more times than I care to remember. I stayed with my precious cat, TCer (T.C. for Top Cat), when she had to be put down at the ripe old age of 18. It was 1998 but I'm sitting here crying as I remember her and how bad I felt about losing her. The vet said, "You've had your cat 8 years longer than the average cat owner" very coldly. I wanted to bitch-slap her. That did NOT make me feel better, obviously. Cats fight the needle, but I refused to leave her alone. Ditto several dogs, but our beautiful golden retriever, Lady, died in her sleep in the backyard at the age of 13.5. Peaceful, like Maggie. Just curled up as though sleeping.

Wow . . . you really got me going. Sorry for the long comment. But my animals are almost as much my kids as my real kids. I pictures of them on my site . . . Queen Sophia and Buddy who is totally devoted to BigBob but tolerates me because I feed him when Bob isn't looking. I can't imagine life without either of them, but I know that we will face it when we have to, just as you did. Hopefully with as much courage, grace, and love.

Oh Lylah, I empathize with you. We awoke on New Year's 14 yrs. ago to our little Addi dog dead on the girls' bedroom floor. Last Jan. John had to take our Sparky in to be put down -- very sad ways to start the new year. Pets do become part of the family and do teach us and our children much about life.
Love you.
